JLC Live New England

Here's more info from the show (Voting closed 6/16; final 2 winners will be announced at the TSNN Awards Gala on 8/11)

What challenge(s) did the show face?

The event, which has been held in/around Providence, RI for 24 years, has been considered maxed out on space for the last 3-4 years. The same exhibitors return every year, taking more space, which then limits the changeover in companies, products, and services we can introduce to attendees. And, having a cult following for so many years is good; however, attendee numbers were flat in 2017 as most attendees are regional and were starting to make the decision to attend every other year due to many of the sponsors wanting to host the same educational content and the same exhibitors each year. The attached hotel books programs over our dates so there's no opportunity to expand and we compete with the NCAA finals every three years in the attached stadium which pulls general attendance through our public space. Additionally, this year we faced four Nor'Easters that left our attendees, who are residential builders, wondering if they could afford any more time off.

What was the Best of Show solution(s)?

Each year, we are able to manipulate the floor plan, ever so slightly, and reconfigure standard spaces to accommodate more s.f., as well as more live demo areas which bring in the bulk of sponsorship dollars. We've added the upper ballroom which now houses almost 14,000 s.f. in booth space, plus the lobbies surrounding the meeting rooms accommodate additional live clinics and demos. In the past, the upper level was only conference session rooms with the ballroom sitting fairly empty except for a one-time student program. To ensure that we get attendees to the new second level, we've moved registration upstairs where EVERY attendee must go to get their badge. And, a new lounge area was created in the lobby foyer which hosts new Meet Ups, podcasts, lounge spaces, charging stations, and reaction walls where attendees are able to provide answers to questions we ask about our attendees and the industry. The Welcome Party, which had been in the area where registration now lives, is spread throughout the upper level exhibits and foyers. The specialists, who host and run the live clinics and demos, support the event and tie in the, now, multiple party areas, by providing giveaways donated by the exhibitors.

And what were the overall results and impact on the show?
From 2017 to 2018, we realized a 34% increase in registered attendees and a 29% increase in overall registration. Additionally, with new s.f., ongoing rate increases, and newly reconfigured display spaces, revenue increased 12%.
What innovative practices, customer service and/or networking environments occurred to make it the best show ever?
Our ongoing development of varying "Meet Ups" allows exhibitors and attendees to gather. For instance, our Women in Construction Meet Up gathered not just female attendees, but male attendees, as well, who were interested in hiring women and exhibitors attended to learn how to sell to women and understand their thought processes behind making purchasing decisions. What started as what we thought would be a female-only attendee event, grew to so much more. The Emerging Professional Meet Up resulted in the same format, with attendees wanting to join to meet both mentors and mentees, and exhibitors wanting to meet emerging professionals to launch new relationships. These programs will continue but now we're adding programs for minorities in business, career-focused and labor-searching Meet Ups, which target all at the event: attendees and exhibitors.

For 24 years, JLC LIVE has been an event that remains tightly knit with the New England building community. And, because it's a building show with a lot of building material, the local fire department benefits from leftovers that exhibitors opt to not ship back. After doing this for many years, exhibitors now plan ahead for extra donations. This is in addition to hand and power tools that many exhibitors bring as donations for the Welcome Party attendees and for the 35 schools which bring close to 800 students from high school to votech.
Did you initiate an “out of the box” idea?

Our out of the box idea simply has to do with finding new programming and logistics to fit the event in a space that was considered sold out years ago, but hasn't yet required us to move cities, all while increasing attendance and overall revenue each year since 1995. Our attendees recognize the growth and appreciate the efforts we make to stay in Providence, from 3' aisles to tucking booths and live demo areas into corners, to creating new sponsorships that provide face-to-face interaction with the attendees who started coming as students and now who bring their own children and/or students, as they've now become faculty. The cult following continues and even though JLC LIVE Is considered a smaller event here at Informa, it is definitely one of our most successful.
